Reflections from WSOPRAS 2025: A Global Gathering on the Bosphorus

Last month, I had the privilege of attending WSOPRAS (World Society of Ophthalmic Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery) 2025, one of the world’s largest oculoplastic surgery congresses, held in Istanbul. It was my first time visiting this vibrant city—and while I expected the rich culture, I didn’t expect the cold!

That aside, stepping into a room with over 400 international experts reminded me just how much we can learn when we look beyond our borders. The days were long (sessions started as early as 7:15am), but the energy was high, the content rich, and the sense of collaboration incredibly strong.

Learning at every turn

From managing complications in blepharoplasty to exploring new treatment options for thyroid eye disease, I walked away with more than just notes—I walked away with a vision for what’s possible in my own practice.

A standout moment was attending a breakfast roundtable on ptosis management, followed by a symposium on a drug called Tepezza, a treatment for thyroid eye disease that has yet to reach South Africa. Seeing how it's used abroad gave me hope that we’ll soon be able to offer the same here.

I also explored how ultrasound is being used to guide filler injections more safely—helping to avoid complications and better assess past procedures. It was clear to me: this is the next investment I’ll be making for my patients.

Istanbul’s own kind of magic

Outside the conference, I managed to catch my breath and explore a little. A Bosphorus cruise offered views of the city’s layered history, and I visited mosques and bazaars that brought Istanbul’s beauty and depth to life. Waking up to the morning call to prayer was something special—it grounded each day in reflection.

Looking ahead

Global gatherings like WSOPRAS don’t just teach—they inspire. They open your eyes to how others are doing things, and they challenge you to raise your own standards. For me, it was also a reminder that we, in South Africa, have so much to offer—and so much to gain from continued learning and connection.

The future of eye care is not just technical—it’s collaborative, innovative, and deeply human. And I’m excited to keep bringing the best of what I learn, home.
